When you think of taking a break what typically comes to mind is much needed rest or going on a vacation. However taking a break is something that you need to do throughout your workday no matter your profession. How often do you say I'll get around to eating lunch once this task is done, and while your working on that tasks more are added to your list? Not to mention you hold your urine as your body lets you know you need to go the restroom, yet you need to finish this first. What are you doing to yourself! You never get around to eating and then your exhausted, hungry, and moody. What then happens is those feeling often make there way into your commute home and straight in your front door. You have to schedule a break while you're at work to eat, hydrate, stretch, and get some fresh air. Doing more won't help you mentally or physically as you need a break from the computer screen, sitting in a chair, standing, lifting, or using a phone. The same way you schedule a meeting you can prioritize and schedule taking a daily break. You can plan for 30 minutes and if you have to cut it short to 20 minutes then so be it, but at least you took some time away to regroup. Sit in your car listen to music, play a mindfulness recording, eat, grab a cup of coffee, take a walk around the building, stretch, or sit on a bench and just breathe. Anything helpful that gets you out your workspace is worth trying. It should never be expected of you nor should you ever push yourself to engage in self-neglect. Your human! Refuel, reenergize, and take a much earned and necessary break. Only you hold the keys to your health!
